Boscombe Down v SUCC 5th XI on Tue 25 Apr 2017 at 17:30
SUCC Won By 41 Runs

Match report 5s off to winning start, as doomsday approaches.

The 5s embarked on another bumper season of fixtures with a trip to RAF Boscombe Down in what is becoming a regular annual fixture. With more than half the team with at least 4 years of SUCC experience under their belt, there was no danger of “new era” thinking clouding what would turn out to be an eventful curtain-raiser. As to be expected with a 5s game, the journey there was a farce, Kayser doing his utmost to dent Bantock’s car door on campus, Sanjay failing to read directions and all parties being assaulted by an April snow storm enroute.
Stanners won the toss and the 5s batted first in a 20-over match on what was a rock hard track, albeit very exposed the elements as we found out to our peril last year. The opposition were immediately instilled with confidence upon observing an embarrassing array of mishits and air shots from 5s stalwart Clough. To everyone’s dismay, the fielder we lent to the opposition (Taskis) repeatedly failed to catch regulation chances off Clough but finally the ordeal was over when he chopped on for 16. The innings was dominated from cameos by Adams, Nielsen and Khatri, demonstrating their 1s prowess against a variety of part time dobbers. The final score was 158 off 20 overs, pleasing captain Stanners who had dollied up a long hop in his pursuit of an “MCC score so we can field many slips” (Stanners, 2017).
On a quick turnaround in increasingly freezing temperatures, the 5s ventured out in every warm piece of clothing that could be ransacked from their kit. Kayser was taught a stern lesson upon discovering that “there is no such thing as a spare jumper in this weather”. Sanjay opened up with a disappointing variation of his usual liquorice all-sorts, in fact even threatening the stumps on occasion. Not to be outdone by the vast quantity of shoes kindly offered by the opposition, shoes were aplenty and spread amongst the team, albeit Taskis continued lead the way. Despite this the opposition lost wickets at regular intervals off the bowling of Taskis, Kayser, Khatri (Patel), Stanners (burglar) amongst others. Particularly of note were two overs of half tracker dross from Taskis and a wasted fingertip catch off a no-ball from Bantock. Apart from some treatment from one batsman, the opposition were never really in the chase, edging their way past 100. The sky was now growing ever darker, a suitable comparison to the future of the club and In the final overs, there were farcical scenes as Adams began refusing to field the ball because he was too cold and the game just eluded an abrupt end from the hail storm that arrived moments after the final ball was bowled.
The 5s retreated to the pub to further discuss the embarrassing state of the club, however, in brighter news it appears that the legacy of the 5s is alive and kicking even in the absence of enduring correspondent Collier-Wright.
