Kingston CC v SUCC 5th XI on Sat 30 Apr 2016 at 12.00
SUCC Won By 40 Runs

Match report The 5’s met on a gorgeous Saturday morning for their third game of the season. With the AU ball the night before, there were plenty of DoD nominations expected, and the team did not disappoint. Marcus arrived to the meet completely binned and unable to drive, while Saad Baloch (“Saad Bollock”, JRye, 2016) was nowhere to be seen. Undeterred, 10 cricketers bungled into 3 cars for the hour long trip to Oxfordshire. Conversation on the journey was dominated by North talking about how ill he felt and how bad his shits were going to be. Upon arrival he stayed true to his word and ruined the gents toilets for the rest of the day with his toxic fumes.
Our HOSTS, Kingston Bagpuize, insisted on us batting first, an offer we were very happy to accept. Gullock and Sanjay opened up and started well. After Sanjay was LBW, Pete Naylor walked out and immediately returned. North arrived at the crease, resulting in a mismatch between the batsmen the likes of which had never before been seen in cricket; Gullock running between the wickets like the Duracell bunny, North more akin to a 4 tonne generator. Gullock reached his 50 and sportingly retired, and North was bowled for 17. This brought the 5s destructive duo Jonny Rye and Alind Roperia to the wicket, who tucked into the distinctly average bowling with numerous boundaries, including a SotD inside-out six over mid-off from Rye. Jonny retired after reaching 50 and Alind holed out for a brisk 32. After a decent contribution from the tail, the 5s had reached 226-5 off 40 overs.
The teams enjoyed a lovely 7/10 tea, with fresh sandwiches and some excellent sweet options. Tea was accompanied by a great gribble over home club member Matthew Warner’s numerous honours board mentions.
By the time the teams returned to the field, it was clear the events of the night before were taking their toll. Rohan and Poil opened up, Poil’s first over going for 17 and reading 6NB-Wd-.-6-1-Wd-lb-1. To be fair, he was bowling to their gun opener who was smacking the ball all over the place, and was given a life thanks to a drop at fine leg from Rohan. This in comparison to his opening partner, who looked like he’d been dared to bat left-handed as a joke. North turned to his gun spinner Marcus in only his 3rd game. The decision was inspired. A masterful piece of captaincy. In his second over, Marcus pitched up the ball enticing the drive, and the ball was sent sailing towards Alind at mid-on. The team waited to celebrate. Marcus had MoM sewn up. Scenes were about to ensue. Or so we thought. The catch went in, then out. Marcus crashed to the floor, his maiden wicket denied. Their gun batsman survived again.
With the HOSTS 105 for no loss at drinks (of which about 2 runs were scored by the left hander), North decided he’d had enough. He roused the troops with an excellent motivational team talk, and it paid off as Rye took a fantastic catch off Ankur’s bowling to dismiss their gun batsman, out for an excellent 78. Naylor shored up his keeping and stopped letting through byes. Ankur then cleaned up the other opener, who had made a Boycott-esque 5 off 77 balls. Gullock then came on to bowl and burgled himself two wickets, and Alind helped himself to a pole. Kingston finished on 186-5 off their 40, giving the 5s a 40 run win.
Sadly, post-match shower time was cancelled when the showers refused to work. Saad was the standout DoD, but due to his absence a second vote was called. I personally thought Alind deserved it, but Poil took the votes after his disastrous first over and for generally being half-asleep in the field the entire game. After enjoying a post-match beer with the opposition, we returned back to Southampton, most of us happy to get back to bed.
MoM – Gullock
DoD – Poil
Shoes – Rohan, ALIND
