SUCC 5th XI v SUCC Old Boys on Sat 25 Apr 2015 at 13:00
SUCC Lost by 2 runs

Match report Youth and talent proved no match for age and treachery as the Old Boys defeated the current club by 4 runs on Saturday.
After a worrying week where the forecast threatened a wash out of the day, conditions were set fair as the Alumni arrived at the scene of so many past glories, Wide Lane. CC Royals, having selected a side with a great deal more emphasis on social prowess than cricketing ability, invited the Old Boys to have a bat first on a vintage Wide Lane wet one. Opening up Bateman bowled a pile of poo and the Old Boys were racing along as ex-CC and author of the freshers' guide Power and Man of Tour 2014 Winpenny took the attack to the bowling. Change bowling was badly needed and it came from the devastating combination of Wooding and Mitchell. Marky Mark found his lines immediately and was rewarded with an early wicket, while Wooding's first couple of overs left something to be desired and led to a constant stream of chuntering from the old man, "How come they can take catches off his bowling?" "He didn't even middle it and it went for 6" "Mark shouldn't be being picked ahead of me" "I can't grip the ball" "It turned too much" "The club isn't what it used to be" "I'm not sure what more I can do" "I think I'm more of an opening bat" (Wooding, 2015).
Fortunately Wooding's bowling improved and he picked up some deserved wickets and the chat disappeared, while the game continued with the Old Boys still going along quite nicely. Tom Price had a great afternoon, out caught Mitchell bowled Clough in one of the more remarkable events ever seen at Wide Lane, while Dharmin led the tail in a bit of a wag to reach 176 off 30 overs.
There was a lack of confidence in the Club's ability to chase this score but the partnership of Roy and North looked uncharacteristically confident with Roy playing the anchor role and North dispatching the ball to the boundary with regularity, reaching only the second fifty of his life, prompting a pitch invasion, a subsequent dismissal and a call to his proud father. Royals and CJ failed to live up to their squad 1 billing, leaving father figure Wooding to see us home as the game got closer. With Roy clinging to the square like a limpet it was up to top 5 rig possessor Wooding to play the Afridi role he is so suited for and he duly obliged, hitting Pricey for "that 6" (Wooding, 2015), a glorious shot over mid off. Roy was finally run out for 52 with an over to go and we were left needing 8 of the final over. Sadly it didn't quite materialise, Wellsy was left needing 6 off the final ball and despite us all being far more confident in his ability to do it than Bateman's, he somewhat predictably swung and missed, leaving us 4 runs short of the target.
An excellent game of cricket was followed by a quite incredible social in Gordons as the alumni and current club mingled, sharing anecdotes of all things Wessex and we were treated to the return of a number of old club traditions, long lost to all but the all knowing freshers' guide. I have to say that I expect Days of the Week will be making a return to the SUCC repertoire and I'd go as far as to say I enjoyed it so much I would include it as one of my Desert Island Disks should the question arise.
A really great day and I for one cannot wait for the next one.

MoM - Clough
DoD - Roy
