RAF Boscombe Down v SUCC 5th XI on Tue 21 Apr 2015 at 18:00
SUCC Won by 68 runs

Match report In bright sunshine the 5s travelled up to Boscombe Down to face the locals at Coates’ RAF base, and with minibus driver Gareth’s road rage heightening as the party neared their destination, captain Coates won the toss and elected to bat.
Nielson and club debutant Taufeeq Sanjay walked out to open the innings, and after seeing off an over from Boscombe’s best bowler the pair started to hit out, with Nielson retiring first for 30 from 25 balls, including six fours, and ending an opening partnership that had put on 63 runs in seven overs. At the other end, Taufeeq had begun to hit out, bringing up his thirty from 17 balls with a six towards cow corner, before being bowled the ball before retiring after Royals missed the chance to retire the batsman.
Gaaareth, the next man in, was welcomed to the crease with odds on another run out being shortened in the pavilion by the second, but batted aggressively, retiring out himself for 33, including two sixes. Knocks from Jamie Basi (7), Coates and Stansfield (7) all came and went, with the 5s captain making amends his second ball duck in the interclub match two days before with 16, before Ashley Sivarajah came on to deliver a brutal innings, bludgeoning four sixes and a four to retire for 31 from just eight balls. With the last of the middle order retiring, there was talk of the tail being set up nicely to top 200. But Pete Naylor, in at eight, put an end to that, nudging a just single from his first 7 balls before edging through to the keeper. However, that let club captain Royals get in, and he proceeded to hit a five-ball cameo for 19, including a six and three consecutive fours, ending the innings to leave the 5s on a strong 190-9 from their eighteen overs.
With the light fading, Saad Boloch and Stanners opened up the bowling, and after a first over that saw keeper Naylor go down in instalments to get his hands on a leg-side wide they managed to tighten up, with Saad finding an edge to be caught at the wicket, not that the slip cordon of Gareth and Ashley were interested, taking selfies as they were. As the light began to fade, Jamie Basi was then given the ball in the sixth over, and bowled Boscombe’s no.3 for a duck, before Taufeeq got his first wicket, caught in the covers. Both would repeat their performances in the next two overs, Jamie in particular bowling well to take 2-0-2-5.
With the pressure on Boscombe, already 62-5, on came Tom Cates for a three over spell of something muttered by Gareth as “filth off-spin”. With the final ball of his first over, Cates took the first of his three wickets for 28, which would later include a spectacular diving catch off a top edge sweep from Gareth running over from the slips. At the other end, Coates, Gareth and Ashley got the chance to turn their arms over, but a straight six off Ash’s bowling kept the Boscombe Down side happy, as Cates reduced their side to 101-8, still needing ninety runs from the last four.
Royals took the game of fives to demote Nielson to being the tenth bowler for the evening, and with the batsmen attacking everything in sight, Royals took a wicket, taking the ninth wicket with one that went straight on, beating the bat, to hit the stumps and narrowly avoiding the edge with the last of his over. Nielson wrapped up the innings with just four balls of his solitary over, and after being hit powerfully for four off his off-spin bowled a leg-spinner that was caught at cover to end the match, with the 5s winning by 68 runs.

MoM – Taufeeq Sanjay, for 30 from 18 and 2-11 on debut
DoD – Ashley Sivarajah, for fielding a certain four while standing at square leg. While umpiring.
