Ventnor C.C. v SUCC 2nd XI on Sat 18 Apr 2015 at 13:30
SUCC Won by 130 runs

Match report The 2’s started their season with a friendly at Ventnor on a day of glorious sunshine in idyllic settings. Everyone, with their passports in hand, got on the ferry over without trouble, but unfortunately for Jayden it was a particularly windy day out on deck so the hours of styling on his hair that morning went to waste. However, after multiple shots he was finally happy with his look in the annual team photo.
In CJ’s absence, Royals took charge for the day as stand in skipper and made a bold choice of electing to bat first on a wicket, which to be fair looked a decent track. Greg Wise and Joe Murtagh opened up and after making a solid start Greg departed for 17 with the score on 51. Next came Sam Hennessy who along with Joe started to up the run rate with some superb shots both bringing up their fifties. After the century stand Sam fell for 54, which included a fair few Manzils maximums. This brought Jayden to the crease who went on to score what could be called one of the worst 50’s seen at the club. I’m not sure how large the edges on his bat are\how small the middle is but I’m not sure if any of his runs came from a clean shot, all of which managed to bisect the field perfectly. Joe fell agonisingly short of a debut tonne chipping to cover on 90, but nevertheless a cracking knock. Anu had a day to forget with a golden duck and that left Kumo and Jayden to finish the innings on a very strong 256-4 off the 40 overs.
After a fairly decent tea, the team set out confident of defending the score. Opening up were the guns Rodda and Wells. Some good areas and a couple of wickets left Ventnor on 43-2 after 10, well behind the required rate. The two gribblers of the side Royals and Jordan entered the fray and began to tighten the screw. Jordan picked up his first wicket for SUCC with a slower ball full toss that fell kindly into the hands of mid off, leading to a questionable celebration. While at the other end Royals picked up a couple of wickets with the batsmen unable to cope with the amount of spin being generated. Then came on the best left arm seamer in the club with a spell Bateman could only dream about. Pilks tore through the middle and lower order to take a fine 4-26, along with this came some moaning from certain members of the team (Jordan) about Pilks nicking other peoples wickets. His dreams of the five-for were shattered as Kumo swaggered in to take the final wicket of the game to leave Ventnor all out for 126.
The only blip on an otherwise fantastic opening day win was Johnny Coates’ poor directions ensuring we missed the ferry home and had to wait another hour and a half which ensured multiple pints were chopped.
