Bristol IV v SUCC 3rd XI on Wed 13 May 2015 at 12:30
SUCC Lost by 44 runs

Match report The 3s rocked up to sunny Bristol brimming with false confidence following our comprehensive victory last time out at the Lane. A sketchy looking opening pair only added to our confidence as Pmac & Sam Jones causing minor havock in the opening few overs. However the game continued in mundane fashion as Bristol made their way to 18-0 off 6. Macauley took the first breakthrough moments later as their opener gloved down the leg side and the umpire, after initially signalling for a wide, changed his mind and raised his finger. That particular batsman has now registered a King Pair against SUCC this season, but his innings’ still manage to outlast the average Bateman relationship.
Sanjay appeared to know something we didn’t as he inexplicably managed to dislocate his finger at this point and was promptly carted off to A&E by a bemused looking Bristol player. From here the game changed as the remaining opening batsman spontaneously remembered he was an absolute gun and proceeded to absolutely destroy our opening attack, carrying Bristol to over 100 off the opening 12 overs - taking full advantage of the BUCS fielding restrictions in the opening 15 overs. The effects of the match took a toll on young Fresher Pilkington whose bowling resulted in a near nervous breakdown (in the form of a 3 hour strop) and he subsequently couldn’t face the pressures of the team shower. I would like to take the opportunity to affirm to the reader that he will be offered all appropriate medical care and has been prescribed to several weeks in the 5s.
Heaney and Submarine man restored some order to proceedings but couldn’t stop their opener reaching a chanceless 100 after only 17 overs. The next ball he skied one off Heaney, and whilst it did momentarily seem as if the motionless Submarine had collided with undersea terrain at long off however he did eventually gain consciousness and took a smart catch. The rest of their limited batting order fell pretty quickly as Bristol fell from 120-2 to 174-9 – it seemed as if the innings was petering out for a below par. Cue Jonny ‘he lost us the game’ Coates to drop a simple catch off the bowling of Stanners, and in typical Bristol style the last partnership went for 65 as they finished on 238ao.
Tea (which lacked both quality and quantity) was consumed by all and capped off by a 5 minute rant by Paul Macauley at his batting position, who proceeded to vocally tally all the batsmen above him in the order which are, in his opinion, “Fucking shit” (2015). Confidence boosted, Alec and Kightley began the reply which was quickly hampered as Alec was bowled by one which couldn’t have bounced more than an inch, much to the Umpires amusement. Coatsey’s dismal day continued as he ruined his prized BUCS average by attemping to run out Kightley before farcically running himself out for 3. His performance has now been referred to the ECB who will examine it for potential match fixing, SUCC are not available to comment on individual cases at this time. Kightley soon followed for 16 and the score plundered to 30-3. Pilkington (33) and Hickford (64) did momentarily worry Bristol, but the total was never under any serious pressure as we crumbled to 194ao.
An excellent 8 man shower did lift spirits as we sang our way back to Southampton.
“He lost us the game, he lost us the game, that Jonny Coates, he lost us the game”.

MoM: Hickford, Dod: Coates.
