RAF Boscombe Down v SUCC 5th XI on Tue 29 Apr 2014 at 18:00
SUCC Won by 7 wickets

Match report After a disappointing weekend weather wise with only one of the scheduled matches taking place, there was a huge amount of concern as the rain bucketed down on the leaky minibus as we took any number of wrong turns through Winchester, alleviated by Gill, Royals and Clough with a long period of Tinder browsing. However, once we arrived at RAF Boscombe Down and Rob Gill had finished creaming himself over the "unbelievable valley" (Gill, 2014) it was clear that our chances of play were high.
After discussion with the home side, it was agreed that on account of the light we would play a game made up of 15 8 ball overs.
Bowling first, Gill for once looked as if we wasn't about to shit himself at the end of his 11 and a half pace run up and promptly dismissed Boscombe's best bat who plays for the RAF, for him ze var was over. This brought to the crease the one, the only M.Mitchell and what followed was a contest every bit as intense as Alan Donald v Mike Atherton in 1998 as Gill steamed in while Mitchell took no prisoners as he flashed the blade like a broadsword, dismissively swiping Gill to the cover boundary at the end of the over. Sadly there was to be no repeat of this epic confrontation as the Submarine Man's relentless line and length proved too much for Mitchell. From this point the bowling was spread out and I mean that in the strongest sense of the word as all 10 fielders bowled.
First change was Sam "tour tour tour lads lads lads shots shots shots" Clough, with the whole club eagerly anticipating his first ball for the club. Your correspondent was at short extra and I saw the ball bounce by my feet, bounce a further two times before stopping in the outfield short of Joel behind the stumps. The bouncing bomb of the Dambusters it was not. Pick of the 10 bowlers was Andy MacAskill, finally playing a game for the club in his 3rd year of membership who continued to be the unluckiest man in Wessex by having a potential 4fer spoiled by dropped catches, outfield slips and refusals. Our RAF hosts finished on 85-9, failing to be bowled out as Clough and Gill managed to combine to fail to execute an under arm throw from 4 yards.
In reply Fresher ALVIN! starred with a knock of 23* while Joel Webb narrowly missed out on the only #manzilsmaximum of the match before Stansfield failed to respond to a first ball shout of 'six or gay' from the pavilion, with the main piece of note being Roy Head's uncanny Michael Holding commentary as Mark Mitchell ran into bowl.
Post match the showers were as close to perfect as it is possible to be, even down to the wonderful decor, and we joined the home side in the bar potentially spending more time there than on the pitch. Almost everyone seemed tempted to sign up for a tour with the RAF and we received worldly advice such as to "never regret the one you do shag".
After a swift minibus trip back to Soton we inexplicably ended up in Sobar and met Jonny Rye who promptly emptied the contents of a triple on a rugby player's head and was banished upstairs.
If the 5th XI shall last for a thousand years, men will still say, this was their finest hour. I'm getting carried away now.
