SUCC 4th XI v Sarisbury CC on Sun 04 May 2014 at 13:30
SUCC Lost by 4 wickets

Match report As the 4th XI arrived at local club Sarisbury, they were greeted by sunlight and a lovely village ground. The morale of the team had also been bouyed by club veteran Andrew Wooding's selfless descision to come along and teach the new players a thing or two about leg spin. Not even the discovery that Rob Gill had forgotten to inform us of the astro pitch (and the hasty spike removal that followed) could mar the atmosphere. Captain Head met with the Sarisbury captain, and it was decided by gentleman's agreement that SUCC would bat first.

Openers Asplet and Head calmly took to the crease, although Asplet soon fell to Sarisbury's only bowler capable of bowling at over 20 mph by nicking onto his own wicket whilst on 4. Fresher Northener fell soon after with a horrendous spoon down to mid off, and fears of a classic 4's collapse were definitely in the air. Fortunately, however, club veteran Rahul steadied the ship with a well batted 21, whilst Head continued to patiently work away, eventually finishing on a princely 60. There was a strong performance from the middle order with Trevorrow, Wooding and Chedda all scoring well into double figures, and Mitchell making a quick 10*. Of special note within the Sarisbury bowling attack was seamer Benn, who was genuinely the spitting image of Gandelf, and with a cry of “you shall not bounce” proceeded to bowl beamers and wides at bemused SUCC batsmen. It was an innings well batted by SUCC, but Sarisbury were able to keep the score down to 181 off 40 overs, with their tried and tested technique of bowling so slowly that the ball was practically going backwards.

Coming out to field, it was clear that Sarisbury had a ringer in their ranks. Opening the batting, he had an aloof manner and argued back with Wooding, rather than take his chirping with good grace. In my time playing cricket it was probably the first time I have seen a team make 50 without the other opener scoring a single run and it was clear he had no business playing at this level (certainly he didn't require the ego boost, as if it got any bigger he would be Jonny Coates). Nevertheless, openers Dobson and Guptal bowled well, both taking a wicket off their opening spells. Spinner Rahul made the breakthrough bowling the first change when he took a fantastic caught and bowled to dismiss the ringer for 60, and generally bowling tightly. By this point Sarisbury were on 120, so it was to be a case of dismissing their remaining 7 players for 60 runs or less, a daunting task indeed. Club veteran Wooding came on to bowl the second change, and managed to turn it practically square on the astro pitch, which was of course completely wasted on the Sarisbury batsmen. Indeed, so astounded was Mitchell by Wooding's sudden burst of good form that he stood there in amazement... as the ball fell through his hands from an absolute dolly. Wooding went on to take two wickets, with Cates taking one also, and despite tight bowling from Mitchell at the other end (with a maiden on his first over of the season) it was too little too late. Sarisbury's ringer had done the damage and their middle order was able to crawl up to 182 with 10 overs still to play.
