Hythe & Dibden CC v SUCC 2nd XI on Mon 05 May 2014 at 13:00
SUCC Won by 94 runs

Match report Monday saw the 2nd XI travel to Hythe and Dibden, the home club of SUCC legend, Tits. The team arrived at the ground on a gloriously sunny day and were stuck into bat on a pitch that, unbeknownst to them, the ball would rarely bounce above knee height. DoD contenders emerged early as Ashley hadn’t brought any trousers with him and keeper Jonny Jonny Rye had only brought one glove.
The opening partnership of Paterson and Wilson set out to post a high score for the visitors. Wilson was the first to fall for 1, knicking off on an attempted cut shot. Paterson found the boundary a few times but on the 7th ball of the 5th over went back to pull a half-tracker that only got to ankle height, it hit him on the pads straight in front and was out for 20. Higgoda and Holcombe then came in, moving the scoring on at a rapid rate. Higgoda in particular laid into the Hythe and Dibden bowling attack, launching two #manzilsmaximums in one over. Holcombe was also punishing some lacklustre bowling, reaching his well-deserved 50 with a 4 through mid-wicket. The pair put on 103 for the third wicket until Higgoda was caught for 46. Holcombe departed shortly after for 65, skying a waist-high full toss from Tits to deep mid-wicket. In came the in-form Hennessey and Sharma, who as they did on Sunday, enjoyed a healthy partnership until Sharma was bowled by Tits for 17. Rye, having found his other glove in his helmet, came and went for 3, bowled by a ball that again kept low. Ashley ‘I can bat’ Sivarajah came in to join Hennessey and the pair had put on 71 when next year’s hockey club captain hit one down deep square leg’s throat, departing for 33. Hennessey finished on an MoM worthy 77, run out by Royals on the last ball to give him a club average of 133. SUCC finished on 275-8 off their 40 overs.
After a strong tea (8/10), Nikul and Bateman opened up for SUCC. Nikul bowled well and beat the bat on multiple occasions, however his figures 6 overs for 18 did not do his opening spell justice. Bateman at the other end removed the opener with a peach of a ball that swung in to hit the top of off. His second wicket came in the same over as he had the no.3 LBW two balls later. The last of Bateman’s three-fer came in his last over when the other opener played on to his stumps, at which point Royals decided that it was time for spin (he wanted a bowl). Chris ‘The Whale Hunter’ Royals bowled his usual economic leggies, accompanied by Sharma with his off spinners. One thing of note from an otherwise dull 14 overs was Tits hitting Kumo for 6 over extra cover. After both bowling 7 overs yet unable to take a wicket, Royals changed the bowlers but continued with spin. Higgoda and Wilson came on to bowl, much to the dismay of Ashley who wanted to bowl because he had batted at 8. Higgoda bowled Tits for a well-played 39 with a ball that turned and took the off stump. After moaning for the past 25 overs, Ashley finally got a bowl. He took a wicket with his second ball, bowling the no.6 for 7. His next two overs went all over the park for 21 “it couldn’t have happened to a nicer bloke” (Paterson, 2014). Holcombe also bowled three overs at the end which only served to lose him the MoM after his solid batting performance. SUCC ended up comfortable victors by 94 runs.
Overall a good victory from the 2nd XI. Always nice to beat an SUCC member’s home club and a victory that puts the 2s in high spirits in time for the game against Bristol on Wednesday.
