SUCC 2nd XI v University of Bristol 2nd XI on Wed 07 May 2014 at 12:30
SUCC Lost by 97 runs

Match report Cricket is a very funny game.
After a strong warm up Wessex headed out to a green Wide Lane track full of confidence, captain Royals having stuck Bristol in due to the potential for first innings showers, and the home side enjoyed a strong start with excellent bowling from Bateman and particularly Conor Jones. At this point Bristol, going nowhere, attempted to raise the run rate with some interesting calls for two and after run outs from Kumo and Sanjay it was clear the away side were panicking and Wessex were totally on top. Further wickets fell, Pricey taking a superb grab at first slip off Royals, CJ picking up a thoroughly deserved wicket with Tits taking a catch at mid off that he absolutely did not misjudge and then Royals bowled the new bat with a "genuine Ashley Giles wonder ball" (Royals, 2014). At 40-5 Bristol were on the ropes, only the heavens could save them. ...And they did, we came off for rain. This took the wind out of the Wessex sails and as Bristol went on the attack we switched off totally. Fair play to the two Bristol bats at the crease, they rode their luck and if we're generous enough to drop the key guy four times, it would be rude for him not to take us for 80 before we finally decided that he'd had enough fun. Infuriatingly the Bristol tail collapsed in Will Holcombe Jesters style, leaving us taking Jayden Clark's 6/10 tea (quality not quantity on display) wondering about what might have been.
We didn't have to wonder for long as the club's fresher intake of great guys on socials and bowlers proved to be a poor recipe for a successful run chase. Kumo fought hard, Jonny Rye looked in decent touch and Royals notched up a #manzilsmaximum but this was, in truth, a pathetic effort from all concerned. Attention swiftly turned to the unfolding history on the next pitch as Roy Head's Barmy Army pulled off the #upsetofthecentury.
A very unusual game of cricket that brought out a range of emotions and saw plenty of us having the dubious pleasure of a shoe pint in Gordons. On Sunday we hope for better things against Bath and at the Vixens' Dinner.
