Ventnor CC v SUCC 2nd XI on Sun 20 Apr 2014 at 13:00
SUCC Lost by 88 runs

Match report First innings missing due to Ventnor saying they'd put it on their website and not doing it...

Spirits were high as 11 of Wessex's finest assembled on campus early on a sunny Bank Holiday Monday for the first game of the year. The destination was Ventnor, the Isle of Wight's best club and after a quick jaunt across Southampton Water to Cowes on the ferry notable for Kumo refusing to leave his car and a windswept team photo, the team arrived on the isle and headed to the other side of it. The technical challenges of a game of wife between Royals and Bateman's cars were negotiated successfully with Huddy and Conor being in constant communication by phone, with the news that Jonny Rye had called a 10 year old because "she has potential" (Rye, 2014) spreading fast.
Arriving at the bizarre bowl shaped ground to be greeted by a superb facility and a hard and fast track, the bowl-first tactics discussed on the ferry "basically we have fuck all batting" (Royals, 2014) had to be adjusted. It turned out to be academic anyway as the call of heads was unsuccessful, Royals went to waa one and SUCC got ready to field.
When the first ball was crashed through the covers for four, one might have felt that Bateman was still in his constant tour state of being unable to say or do anything coherently but tell Vixen freshers that they're really fit, but the second ball answered that, knocking out the middle stump to wild and somewhat gay celebrations from the bowler. A sharp run out from Holcombe and another Bateman wicket had Ventnor on the ropes before a solid partnership of 100 or so took us out the game for a while with the change bowling largely ineffective and one of the few highlights being the arrival of Holcombe's sister, to many cries of "WIFE". With Ventnor moving through the gears, debutante Sanjay Kundu provided an excellent spell of medium pace, bowling the last 9 overs on the trot from one end and thoroughly deserving his three wickets. The returning Bateman picked up a fourth in the final over before jug avoiding on the last ball of the innings.
Ventnor's 275 was potentially reachable if we got a good start as the track was hard and fast, the outfield was drying all the time and the boundaries small. When Rye and Kumo lost their middle stumps in the first over this started to look ridiculous and with the score on 20 with 2 runs off the bat there was potential for this to become a very dismal day.
Full credit to Jayden Clark for an excellent 51 in tough circumstances, though then getting out to a 14 year old leggie the ball after reaching 50 was something we could have done without. 30s from Sanjay and Royals put Wessex in a position where the game was a contest before Sanjay got stumped nearly heading into orbit swinging at the 14 year old and Royals, seemingly a broken man after missing out by less than a foot on his first club #manzilsmaximum played on, putting the match to bed. Shower time followed and was enjoyed by all who participated and Holcombe getting WWH'd in the shower can't be something that happens every day.
And here we are gents, the start of the season, the time when BBC Weather streaks ahead of pornhub on my most visited tab on google chrome, when any pretence I have to a life outside the sport disappears and no doubt some memorable days are to come along the way. As ever, I'm incredibly keen.
