Stoke Green CC v SUCC 2nd XI on Sun 14 Apr 2013 at 12:00
SUCC Won by 3 wickets

Match report Verdant green outfields, perfect sunshine with not a cloud in sight, a good track, good tea and a great game of high scoring cricket. Is there any better dream that a cricketer can have in the depths of winter than that of the start of the season? Well yes, maybe a couple but they generally involve darkened rooms, no clothes and Cheryl Cole. When in reality the club cricketer meets arctic temperatures, green wickets and miserable, dour matches come April, the former dream becomes just as fanciful as the latter. However, as 11 men of Wessex assembled on the concourse Sunday morning in their finest ones (in reality 10 in finest ones and Kumodak in well... something) they were met with glorious sunshine more reminiscent of June or July and hopes were high for a cracking day of cricket.

Following a swift minibus journey up the motorway notable for Jav and Dawson absolutely panicking in a game of ‘wife’ and calling ‘genuine 2s’ (Royals, 2013), the dream started to die when confronted with a wicket almost indistinguishable from the outfield (to be fair to Stoke Green’s groundsman it was a bloody good effort to get any sort of playable pitch out at all). The green top gave Cartwright an easy decision upon winning the toss and SUCC took to the field together.

Opening bowlers Cartwright and Humphrey bowled tight, accurate spells and were supported by an excellent fielding effort, diving stops being made on the boundary, Royals taking a sharp catch low down at short extra and Dawse putting in a fine one handed stop at gully, all inside the first five overs. In truth, SUCC were all over the hosts for practically the entire innings, with all bowlers impressing during their spells, most notably Hudson with 3-9 off 4 overs. The fielding effort maintained high standards throughout, with perhaps exceptions being made for dropped slip catches and Kumodak taking two attempts to pick up a stationary ball on the boundary. Green’s tail wagged, with some agricultural swings to the short boundary off the spinners bringing them to something close to a respectable score of 110 all out.

Much like the clubhouse, teas have improved dramatically at Stoke Green since the last time I played there and just about everyone had seconds before the chase began. Any pretensions of an easy chase were dispelled early as wickets fell regularly in the first 10 overs. Our squad one top order batters had clearly not had enough practice this winter against our very own Dan Cox as ‘old man spin’ was Stoke Green’s weapon of choice for the day and they struggled to deal with the total lack of pace or bounce. At 30-3 Wessex were in a lot of trouble, but the ship was steadied by the experienced West Country pairing of Tits and Dawson who negotiated a long spell of accurate slow bowling. However, the chase was never entirely comfortable and when Tits was dismissed in bizarre fashion, jumping away from a ball that he must never have seen, only for it to home in on his middle stump, there was still a long way to go to victory. Dinesh and Kumodak, however, got us over the line with overs to spare with some classy shots and sensible batting.

In the end a good workout for all concerned and the performance bodes well for both the 2s and 3s for the upcoming BUCS season. Our thanks to Stoke Green for hosting and preparing a wicket in terrible conditions and to Wooding for ‘working tirelessly’ (Wooding, 2013) to organise the match.

MoM – Hudson (nominees: Tits, Royals, Dawson, Kumodak)
DoD –Dawson (nominees: Kumodak, Jav)
Banked fines: Dawson – 1x WWH, 2x shoe
