SUCC Won by 6 wickets

Match report SUCC vs Ventnor Wessex take good form in to new season
Another cold morning and another away game awaited as SUCC 1st travelled to Isle of Wight for their pre-season warm up match against Ventnor. Although a tough game was predicted, Ventnor having won the previous two meetings between the clubs, a renewed sense of optimism was felt after a positive result the week before against Solent.
The journey proceeded with minimal fuss and upon reaching the island it was quickly decided that a trip to McDonalds would be warmly received to calm those pre-match nerves. It was here where the lively discussion about the location of the Monopoly property Coventry St was held with Bean forwarding the DOD-winning theory that it was in fact in Coventry and that not all Monopoly properties are in London. Aren’t you from London Bean?
Match preparations were good, SUCC looking a very professional outfit in matching stash. That was until Nikul Ramesh came striding across the outfield dressed in full whites (including cap) to do the warm up. The view of the team was that this was very village. The Ventnor skipper won the toss and had no hesitation in choosing to bat on a docile early season pitch. Warner was soon rewarded for a tight opening spell with the wicket of Cheek (0) who was caught behind well by Backhouse. In spite of the valiant efforts of seamers Price and Ramesh, Ventnors second wicket partnership grew beyond 100 and Wessex were under pressure. However, the introduction of spinners Ashley and Aston began to tie Ventnor down and their efforts were eventually rewarded with Aston taking the key wickets of Westhorpe (61) and Calloway (43). The Ventnor middle order offered little resistance as the self-proclaimed “fastest bowler in the club” McSweeney-Atkins claimed 3 wickets, the highlight being Willway catching Miller far to his left at first slip. There was a brief delay to Ventnors slide as the veteran Brayford (back from retirement after 5 years) offered tough resistance to Hawker who eventually had him bowled, removing two pegs from the ground. Willway made light work of the youngsters at 9 and 11 as Ventnor were all out for 168, a below par score.
In truth Soton’s reply never looked in doubt with Nichols (17) and Edmonds (10) getting Wessex off to a steady start until Edmonds was unluckily run out at the non-strikers end. Nichols soon followed, looking to target the small boundary with a slog sweep only to miss it by about a yard. McSweeney-Atkins’ innings was destructive, often bullying the inexperienced (12 and 13 y.o) Ventnor attack on his way to 67. He was ably supported by Willway (43) but both were dismissed just before the end. Podmore (7*) and Backhouse(2*) saw the team home to a 6 wicket victory in the 33rd over.
A job well done by the Southampton team but you can’t help but think there’ll be tougher tests to come later in the season.
