Southampton Solent University v SUCC 1st XI on Wed 10 Apr 2013 at 12.30
Match was Tied

Match report A dreary day greeted the arriving teams on Wednesday morning, with impending rain scheduled for 4 o clock. However, thanks to a great effort from the solent groundstaff after heavy rain the previous few days, the game was to go ahead, with a split 40 over format. Solent won the toss and elected to bat. Matt Warner and Ben Hawker opened the bowling and were tight to their lines, which was key with a very short square boundary. Pressure created from both the accurate bowling and sharp fielding led to the first wicket, where Warner drew a poor shot from the Solent opener who spooned the ball in the air looking to go over the infield. By the time Alex Podmore came into the attack, the Solent captain and opener looked set and was quick to pick off anything slightly short of a length on either side of the wicket. After the first 20 overs of play Solent were 65-1.

Ed Nichols and Ethan Fogarty opened up the batting for SUCC and looked to provide a solid platform in tough conditions. Fogarty played positively hitting powerfully through the covers and when pulling on the backfoot, however was caught for 15. Ali Edmonds joined Nichols at the crease and between them the pair looked set to play out the rest of the innings until Nichols was caught behind for a well worked 30. SUCC finished 66-2 off their initial 20 overs.
With the rain still an hour or so away, play resumed promptly after the innings in an effort to get a full 80 overs played. With the pitch providing some turn, the spin of Josh Ashton and Ashley Sivarajah was pivotal in keeping the run rate of Solent down in the second half of their 40 overs. Ashley bowled really well on debut picking up 2 wickets, including that of the opening bat who was set after reaching his 50. The bowlers were backed up by a good effort in the field, with the likes of Seb Cartwright taking a good catch in the deep off the bowling of Josh Ashton. Solent finished on 185-5 from 40 overs.

This left SUCC with 120 to win from the last 20 overs of the game. With the rain now pouring down batting seemed to get harder with both Edmonds and Willway going in the teens. Backhouse and Podmore were then looking to up the scoring with a variety of shots, including a delightful reverse-swept 4 from Podmore. Once Podmore fell on 14, Baker joined the crease with 9 an over needed. Backhouse was now finding the boundary regularly with sixes on both the offside and leg. With Baker being bowled for a score of 14 also, Backhouse was joined by Hawker to guide SUCC home. Through a trememdous 59 not out from Backhouse, and what may be deemed as a horrendous shoe off the last ball of the innings SUCC were able to secure a tie in this pre-season fixture.

A special mention must be made to Chris Royals who umpired excellently in the cold and rain, and also James Taylor who volunteered to score the match.
