SUCC Lost by 164 runs

Match report SUCC 3rd XI vs BUCC 2nd XI - 21st April 2013 – 'Daddy shined against a strong Bristol side'

The strange decision to bat first on a pretty woeful looking pitch by Bristol was quickly understood as some fine quality batting by their opening batsmen and slightly wayward bowling saw the score rocket past 100 within 12 overs. The batting side made strong use of a very short boundary on the one side. With the seamers continuing to get punished initial optimism began to fade along with hopes of getting an early season tan as it began to cloud over.

The flow of runs began to stem when skipper Javed turned to plan B in the spin bowling of Kumo & Daddy who ended up with figures of 2-43 & 2-42 respectively off their 10 overs. Kumo struck first with a sharp catch off his own bowling to bring to an end a quality innings of 76 from the Bristol opener. Both spinners bowled a tight line & length also seeing some purchase off the pitch. This was emulated by Callow who picked up a wicket with his leg spin bowling, on debut like many others playing today. This was followed closely by a sharp stumping from Coates, who kept well all afternoon, off the bowling of Daddy. Despite best efforts the runs kept flowing for Bristol and despite two late wickets for Rodda the continued peppering of the short boundary late on mounted a rather large 341 off their 50 overs.

After a quick tea, well made by Hudson and his flatmates, the monumental total was set about by the pair of Daddy & Dawson. The Bristol openers bowled tight lines and made it difficult to get away. After 10 overs the score already seemed unattainable as the run rate steepened along with three quick wickets of Dawson, Javed & Callow. Without depressing people too much with this match report on a lighter note and highlight of the innings was Daddy’s batting display showing reserve & resolve with a respectable 54 after weathering the early onslaught by the Bristol openers. Other players came & went with other respectable contributions from Tits & Coates scoring 31 & 27. The middle & lower order however were blown away by the opposition bowling of Gerrard who in picking up a five wicket haul and claiming the final wicket brought SUCC’s valiant effort to a close on 177 all out.

All in all it was a tough opening game of the season against a very strong side. However with the score line aside there were signs that the 3rd XI could compete in this league particularly marked by the individual performances of Edward Dadd (Daddy) & Kumodak.
