University of Plymouth 2nd XI v SUCC 4th XI on Wed 24 Apr 2013 at 12:00
SUCC Lost By 10 Runs

Match report Setting off from Southampton at 8am, it was clear that the journey to Plymouth would be of epic proportions. After successfully navigating AK's bane (the wooden posts in the SUSU car park) we were on the road and off to the first fixture of the 4th XI calendar. Following a brief respite in a service station for the away day freshers to purchase a dirty magazine, we were back on the road again, and Wooding was nursing a semi. Upon reaching Plymouth, a high intensity game of wife broke out where Wooding again showed his expertise by calling a genuine 50 year old 2/10.
Having won the toss, fielding first was clearly the right option due to a strong bowling line up consisting of Bantock, Jones, Telkman and Taylor. Donning our whites, it soon became clear that extras would be the star player in the Plymouth side, contributing more to their cause in the first few overs than their batting lineup. Nevertheless, strong opening spells were bowled by Bantock and Telkman, and the fielding was generally tight, despite the spike-less Mitchell and Raul falling flat on their backs when trying to stop simple balls. Bantock provided the breakthrough, and took two further wickets, with tight bowling from Jones bringing another couple. As the early bowlers finished their spells, the relief proved more than up to the task with Raul and Taylor clearing out the rest of the Plymouth line up for a final total of 93 all out.
Following a delicious tea, where Raul showed his cricketing inexpertise by being unable to identify a Scotch Egg, it was out to bat and with such a low total to achieve on a flat wicket, there were high hopes that the whole affair would be wrapped up by mid afternoon. After 15 deliveries without bat on ball, opener Head was unfortunately dismissed on 0. Kearsly, opener number two, was not so easily shaken and displayed Dravid-like qualities by hanging around for the first 15 overs. Keeper Webb came in at three and contributed 11 to the cause before a couple of questionable LBW's on Stevens and Jones left SUCC in a bad shape. A tail end partnership of Telkman and Mitchell steadied the ship, and took the score from 46-6 to a respectable 73-7, but a mistimed sweep from Mitchell left the remaining tail with what proved too much to chase and SUCC were all out for 83 despite a good knock from Bantock.
MoTM – Bantock for a fantastic bowling spell (Nominees: Jones, Webb)
DoTD – James Taylor for his hideous orange trainers (Nominees: Wooding, Raul)
Shoes: Wooding x1, Webbx1, Raulx1
