SUCC Indoor 2nd VI v Portsmouth II on Sun 28 Feb 2010 at 11.00
SUCC Won by 2 runs

Match report 11 o'clock on a damp Sunday morning, and the balcony of the Old Sports Hall was oozing with anticipation for what was hoped to be a fantastic, and moreover, successful day against Pompey.

The 2s were first up, and batting first with Prashanth and Keyte opening up. The first ball was guided to backward point and a run was called.... 1-1! Keyte continues his failed run out the doors and into the changing room, and it wasn't long until he was reunited with Cozier. Lovegrove-favourite, Chris Warne was next to the crease but was largely frustrated by consistent bowling in the corridor of uncertainty outside leg-stump. Pre fell in the sixth over for 11, and Nathan and Warney continued to struggle despite runs flowing in extras. Both fell in the 9th over with the score on 86, and all of a sudden a below-par score was on the cards. Thankfully Ritvik and Meddle came in and not only steadied the ship, but accelerated the run-rate to take the score to 128 all out from the full 12 overs. Perhaps 10-20 runs short, but defendable.

To defend the total, early wickets seemed a necessity, so Meddle shelling a catch at mid-off from Ritvik's first delivery wasn't really appreciated. However Meddle regained his composure to take a sharp caught and bowled chance from the first ball of the second over. The remainder of the over was picked off for 15 runs so it was to our great relief that Ritvik nabbed Wright in the next over. 32-2 from 2.3 overs soon turned to 71-4 from 6 overs thanks to two run outs. Pompey were keeping with the run-rate, so we needed to bowl them out. However Prashanth, despite being the most economical, couldn't find the wicket, while Warney looked pretty lucky not to go for 100 from his 3 overs. Tension was building, and the only place to look for anything positive was at point, where Keyte, fresh from his 0-ball duck, entertained the crowds with gun-shows, golfing exhibitions and general vacancy. As we entered the last over, 9 runs were required for Pompey, we needed 1 wicket. Meddle was the man to bowl:
First ball: 3 runs
Second ball: dot
Third ball: wide!!!!! 3 to win
Fourth ball: dot
Fifth ball: surely a wide? no! dot ball
Sixth ball: nudged away, they take the run... Warne gets round... and gone!!!!! RUN OUT!!!! WESSEX WIN THE FIRST MATCH!!! (I don't think I'll be getting a job for the BBC live text anytime soon)

So there it was. As the players celebrated below, the Wessex contingent on the balcony burst into a renditon of 'Wessex Walk on Water'. 1-0 with one to play (no-one really cared about the rat game in between), and confidence was high.

Meddle and Ritvik were both contenders for MoM, but Meddle's two dropped catches gave Ritvik the crown, while Prashanth got DoD for persisting with Warne for his full allocation.
