Winchester I v SUCC 4th XI on Sun 25 Apr 2010 at 12.30
SUCC Won by 1 wicket

Match report Buoyed by the success of sending Portsmouth back with an absolute dicking, SUCC 4th XI began their BUCS season with a potentially tricky trip to our near neighbours Winchester.

Having won the toss, SUCC elected to bowl on a pitch which at best can be described as spicy. Stuart ‘Disney’ Johnson and Michal 'ID' Knap took the new bowl. Disney bowled a particularly impressive spell, utilising the tricky conditions and asking a lot of questions to the Winchester top order. But it was ID who claimed the first scalp taking a simple caught and bowled chance.

The introduction of ‘The Flying Dutchman’ Pierre De Jager and Joe ‘Eyes’ Urben led to a spell of dominance from SUCC. Pierre bowled at a decent pace and Eyes extracted a lot of turn and variable bounce from the pitch. Eyes was the pick of the bowlers taking 4-39 although he was helped by the Winchester batsmen missing out on his horrible full tosses. Fresher Win joined the attack and bowled with good control to take 3-15. The home side were bowled out for 137 capping of a decent fielding display although 38 of these came from extras - 35 of which were wides, which was disappointing and something which has to be worked on during the season.

SUCC’s reply got of to the worst possible start as Dharmin ‘shit chat’ Naik departed for a diamond duck. Skipper George ‘Man tits’ Sanderson and Stuart ‘Disney’ Johnson set about rebuilding the innings - Tits in particular playing some uncharacteristically attacking shots. Both fell in quick succession – Tits holing out for 30. There followed a flurry of SUCC wickets before ‘Amanda’ Holden Whitaker and David ‘Northern Monkey’ Knightbridge steadied the ship. Amanda played particularly well timing the ball nicely and scoring all round the wicket. With the aid of a few dropped catches the pair got SUCC past the 100 mark. There again followed a flurry of wickets – Holden falling to a ‘brute’ of a ball for a tidy 40.

At 109-9 it had seemed all hope was lost. The last wicket pair of Win and Eyes dug in and with the help of extras and a few edges they limped towards the target. While the players on the boundary devised ways to stop Dharmin’s endless stream of gribbly chat (highlights include ‘it was somewhere between a Yorker and a full toss(!)) Eyes and Win set about reaching the target. With the help of a lot of extras SUCC made the target for a nail biting 1 wicket win.

MOM went jointly to Eyes and Win for their excellent bowling and brave last wicket stand. Honourable mention too to Disney for his excellent opening spell and Amanda for his knock. DOD went to Dharmin for his diamond duck and for replacing Tits (maybe) as having the worst chat in the club.

SUCC 4th XI now play Plymouth in their next fixture.
