Exeter IV v SUCC 3rd XI on Wed 28 Apr 2010 at 12.30
SUCC Won by 5 runs

Match report A fruitful journey included a stop to pick Sri up after over-sleeping (spending too long doing his hair), Keylock re-decorating the side of the bus with his vomit, Nilesh entertaining the team with some interesting stories and plenty of rotten granny porn.

Having been told by the female umpires (?) the game had to finish by 7pm, because they had ‘plans’, SUCC had to get straight to an eventful warm-up, which didn’t exactly have the opposition shitting themselves. Soph’s questionable throw from 10 yards set the tone.

Nilesh won the toss and decided to bat on a decent track with short boundaries all round. Tits got the team off to a quick start, throwing his weight into every short, needless to say, sending the ball flying to the ropes. The pair showed great timing but were both undone by a decent spell of bowling and after the captain came and went, SUCC were 40-odd for 3 with not long gone. Alma and Keylock battled hard, especially the latter who wore a few short balls from the opener, and a powerful acceleration brought up the 100 partnership.

Despite fifties for both Keylock and the Dolphin, SUCC looked to be in trouble with wickets falling rapidly with no momentum to put runs on the board and see the team through the 45 overs. With 10 overs left cocktail came to the crease, just about managing to survive and pick up slow runs. Wickets continued to fall at the other end, bringing in Kudzi as the final batsman. The pair put on a 55-run partnership for the last wicket, with all credit going to the no.11 who found the boundary with ease despite being comically dropped a few times on his way to 30 not out.

With 242 on the scoreboard, we felt with a strong bowling attack the game was ours. Tight opening spells and great shape from Kudzi and Soph pinned down the openers. Chances came often and it was Sophie with the break-through. Wessex piled the pressure on with sharp fielding (Sri, not you mate) and had Exeter 3 down early in the game. However, the 4th wicket partnership looked set to change the game, with both batsmen hitting the ball cleanly with great timing. Tight bowling, notably from Yogi and the skipper and a great catch from Sri after colliding with Yogi got rid of the danger man and Wessex look set for victory. 2 run outs, courtesy of Kudzi’s sharp work and cocktails direct hit from the edge of the circle created more pressure. However, a great knock from one of their lower order batsmen kept them well in the game. With 14 to win from the last over and one wicket remaining, the experience of Mr. Yogi Bear looked set to have the game won for Wessex, but with their batsmen on 50, the match was still in the balance. A no-ball beamer first up from Yogz was spanked for four and he was removed from the attack following previous warnings about the brutality of his beamers. The 5 bowlers had already completed their allotted overs, so Nilesh decided to pick on Fresher Darrell to take the blame if we lost. 8 needed off 6 was the target. A few dots and 2 byes made it 6 off 3. Keylock snaffled a sharp chance after Cocktail found the edge and Wessex had a well deserved victory. I’ve experienced a few tight games in my short time at the club, but the skidmarks on my underwear suggests this was the most thrilling.

DOD – Yogi, for doing his best to lose us the game

MOM – Darrell, for a important knock, cracking run out and match winning last over.
